St John WA will soon commence a new Community Transport Service for Kambalda and its surrounding community giving people an affordable way to get to and from their medical appointments.
St John Health Services Director Phil Holman said St John introduced this service in 2015, and it has proven extremely popular with people who don't have access to private or public transport.
“The service was introduced after recognising that many elderly people, and others, were in need of assistance in getting to their primary care givers,” Mr Holman said.
“Community Transport offers an affordable service for safe and reliable travel.
“You can come along and learn more about the service and take a look at the new vehicle at Kambalda’s biggest sporting event on June 15.
“We will be parked at the recreation centre’s entrance for the Goldfields Giants basketball game and would encourage everyone to come and say hello.”
Mr Holman said initially the pilot service will run a couple of days a week, but once we understand the community’s need we can build our volunteer driver base.
The role of Community Transport Volunteer provides a different opportunity to volunteer for St John and people only need a first aid certificate, a driver’s licence and police clearance.
Drivers will receive free first aid training, a uniform and other benefits, as well as the satisfaction of supporting the community.
“The Community Transport Service is just another part of St John’s integrated country primary health model, which along with our volunteer and community ambulance service, first aid training and support and GP service, provides a safer, more resilient community.”
“St John would like to thank the Coolgardie Shire who have provided funding for this service and continue to work closely with St John to support the community’s needs,” Mr Holman said.
Coolgardie Shire President Cr. Malcolm Cullen said this is a continuation of the partnership that the Shire has established with St John for improved medical, health and community services for Kambalda residents.
“The Shire is pleased to see that St John is continuing to make advances in the provision of multiple service offerings with this purpose built vehicle for the use by our communities,” he said.
