Four emerging artists will share their works-in-progress as part of Sahra Salon at Parramatta Artists’ Studios (PAS) on Thursday 25 July at 6:30pm.

Sahra Salon is part of the Studio Stories program, a series of literary events at Parramatta Artists' Studios where Western Sydney writers share their unique stories.

Event attendees will experience a night of performances, screenings, soundscapes and conversations as artists Hajer, Abu Bakri Mahmoud, Samia Sayed and Shareeka Helaludin present their works.

“Parramatta Artists’ Studios events, such as Sahra Salon, not only give artists a unique platform to share their work with the public, but also provide the community an opportunity to expand their understanding of art and see pieces they may otherwise never experience,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said.

“Through their collection of stories and artworks, these local artists are demonstrating the diverse and rich talent Western Sydney has to offer, and I’m proud to say that Parramatta Artists’ Studios is playing a valuable role in cultivating and nurturing many of these artists.”

Sahra Salon is a free event, but bookings are essential.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Hajer, whose work ranges from short stories to essays and plays, explores themes of womanhood and identity formation, particularly within Arab and Semitic diaspora.

Abu Bakri Mahmoud is a multi-media content creator, who works as a photographer and video producer for the ABC. His focus is on stories about people, art and culture.

Through her work, Samia Sayed examines the experience of being raised in Australia amongst first-generation families, traveling to homelands, the tensions between these worlds, and the loss and violence that she has experienced.

Shareeka Helaluddin is a multidisciplinary artist and facilitator who uses writing and soundscapes to explore queerness, diaspora, futures, and questions of how to resist - and heal from - structures of oppression.

Parramatta Artists’ Studios is an initiative of the City of Parramatta and provides affordable studio spaces for artists from Parramatta and beyond. It also offers a range of events, workshops and arts activities to the broader community throughout the year.
