Dog owners in the Byron Shire will be pleased to know that Council is upgrading its network of dog poo bag dispensers, increasing the size of the dispensers so they hold more bags as well as installing them in more locations that are popular with dog owners.
Byron Shire is lucky to have incredible beaches and reserves, many of which are dog-friendly and the availability of free dog poo bags in some of these areas is an incentive for people to do the right thing and clean up after their pets.
The new bags will be compostable which means they will be able to be put into a general waste bin or the organics bin and this is reducing single-use plastics in our community.
“It is important for people to put the bags in the bin and not throw it into bushland or leave it on the beach because even though the bags are compostable, they do not break down unless they are in the right conditions,“ Council’s Resource Recovery Officer, Stephen Green, said.
“On behalf of Council I would like to thank the team of volunteers from our Shire who, for 10 years, have been tirelessly restocking the dispensers as a community service.
“These people not only love their dogs but have a strong commitment to the environment and their dedication has given people the means to clean up after their pets and keep our beaches and parks clean.
“On behalf of the community, and all of our dogs, we say a huge thank you,” Council’s Resource Recovery Officer Stephen Green said.
