Myall Creek gets over $2 million of final works from masterplan

Dalby’s Myall Creek parklands is about to undergo the finishing touches from Western Down Regional Council’s long-term master plan that was developed back in 2012.

Council is on-track to activate works over the coming months including an extra 1.3km of footpath, a new bridge near Amos Street, a new toilet block, significant landscaping and the extension of the wild bird habitat.

Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the Dalby Welcoming Committee was successful in securing funding for the initial concept plan and were very pleased that the Council has come on-board with the full vision for the parkland.

“This has been a project quite a few years in the making, so I am thrilled to see the final elements of the plan now coming to life,” Cr Tillman said.

“Works will initially commence along the northern side, between Jacko Cavanaugh bridge and Winifred Street.

“The extra footpaths will close the gap in the current footpath network and will connect to the brand-new pedestrian bridge that we’re going to build at Amos Street,” she said.

The new unisex toilet block to be installed in Anderson Park will have disability and ambulant access, new solar lighting will be installed along the pathway plus people can look forward to some brand-new park furniture.

Some major landscape works and informative signage will be added to the existing toy library site, which has an interesting history, being the site of the first bore in Dalby.

There is already a small native bird habitat at the eastern end of the parkway near Amos St and the new plantings of trees and shrubs are specifically designed to encourage greater numbers of birdlife to the area.

The existing Warrego Highway bridge is also getting a facelift and will be painted in modern art-deco inspired colours.

“These works will freshen up this space and enrich the enjoyment of social activities along Myall Creek for locals as well as those passing through,” Cr Tillman said.

The masterplan has been brought to life in several stages over the past few years.

The first stage focused on Anderson Park plus the installation of new gym equipment in front of the Dalby Aquatic Centre.

Then the footpath network was built along the creek, with the most recent addition being the new playground at Jimbour St opposite Dalby State Primary School.

This final stage totalling $2.026 million has been 50% funded by State Government’s local government grants and subsidies program.
