There was a noticeable absence at Baranduda Community Centre’s first Pop-up Italian Community Cafe.

Conversation and laughter could be heard around the dining tables but there was no sign of mobile phones.

Local Italian Leti Gavioli was the resident chef, cooking gnocchi on the night.

“There was great food and conversation was flowing all night,” she said.

The aim of the event was to bring community together over a meal and have people connect and share.

“Looking around there were people having conversations with people they had just met and there was no sign of people sitting around on their phones,” Leti said.

“The night was definitely a success.”

The next Pop-up Italian Community Cafe will be on Friday, August 16 from 5.30pm.

We ask people bring along their own sides to share.

Leti will cook lasagne.
