Council trainees are stars on the rise and were recognised at the 2019 Tropical North Queensland Training Awards held at an awards dinner in Cairns recently.

Council trainee and Mission Beach local, Maddie England was a finalist at the awards.

Cr. Jeff Baines who was in attendance at the awards said, “we are so proud of Maddie and our other staff, all of whom do so well serving the community on a daily basis.  These staff are frontline and do a great job.  They are a credit to the organisation.”

Maddie who completed her schooling at Good Counsel College in Innisfail in 2017, completed a one-year business traineeship in 2018 and is now employed with Council in the Customer Service team.

The awards showcase all that's great about vocational education training in Queensland, with categories for apprentices, trainees, vocational students, teachers and trainers, as well as training providers and employers.

Skills development and youth employment continues to be a focus for Cassowary Coast Regional Council with ongoing support of traineeship programs.

It is fantastic to see Council’s trainees complete their studies and progress with opportunities with full time work and other career development either directly with Council or other employers.

The success at the 2019 Tropical North Queensland Training awards follows the recent Innisfail Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, where four of Council’s 2019 trainees employed by Skill360 were nominated in the Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Award 2019 category:

• Hannah Spinella, Business

• Natasha Sayers, Business

• Storm Romelo, Business

• Travis Holt, Horticulture
