2020 Artist in Residence announced

The residency program is known for supporting artistic development and emerging arts practices by offering studio space, $5,000 in funding, and a three month exhibition in the Stein Gallery.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the program provides a unique opportunity to emerging and established artists by helping them further their careers.

“FCMG is a two-time winner of the IMAGine industry awards, and has been published in international art journals,” Mayor Carbone said.

“Our Artist in Residence program offers local artists professional development and a chance at building their creative profile through networking opportunities with the broader artistic community.

“Council is proud to offer this opportunity to artists, to give them the opportunity to work and showcase their work locally for our community,” Mayor Carbone said.

“I look forward to Niramsin’s collaboration with the gallery in 2020.”

Yakou is a Sydney-based performance artist who has achieved recognition for his innovative urban presentations focussing on humanitarian awareness and cultural inclusion.

Dubbed the Fairiety Show, the exhibition will be a short film documenting workshops, performance activities and conversation captured over 12 weeks and shot on the grounds of the FCMG, local schools and community centres.

Yakou said the purpose of the film is to gain an insight on the communities that make up Fairfield’s unique fabric, and exchanging culture and diversity through art, music and performance.

“The Fairiety Show will feature a collection of songs, stories and performances inspired by my collaboration with the community,” Yakou said.

“The Stein Gallery will be transformed into a theatrical space for the exhibition opening, complete with screens, lighting and a sound system to showcase the short film and live performances.”
