Plantation Park will soon be ringing out with the sound of happy children, with fences surrounding the highly anticipated Plantation Nature Play set to come down next week.
Burdekin Shire Council Acting Mayor Sue Perry said the $2 million-dollar nature based play space will lead the Burdekin into a new era of inclusiveness.
“Plantation Park is already such a fantastic place to visit and the addition of this new accessible playground has created a great space for children of all abilities to play side-by-side on the same equipment,” Cr Perry said.
“The hero of the development is the multi-level fortress which incorporates a rope balance bridge, rock and rope climbs and an accessible elevated viewing area. Additional play features include an accessible interactive water play area, creek bed, grassed mounds, swings, sand play table and a forked log climber.”
Cr Perry said the playground was designed to challenge children while developing fine motor skills and building strength through outdoor play.
“By exploring a variety of environments, children will be able to develop their creativity and reduce levels of anxiety.
“It will also help them develop upper body and core strength, which are important for reaching developmental milestones.
“Plantation Nature Play will provide hours of fun for children to climb, swing and explore to their hearts content.”
Unlike most playgrounds, the Plantation Nature Play includes very little plastic equipment.
Instead, it takes inspiration from the surrounding natural bush setting and features a range of natural materials such as timber, grass, smoothed stones, river sand and water.
Cr Perry said the project included the construction of a number of new facilities which would benefit residents and visitors of all ages.
“This development includes ample seating, a sheltered hammock alongside the double BBQ area and plenty of open areas to lay out a picnic blanket and relax.
“I can just imagine people of all ages heading to Plantation Park to make the most of our wonderful North Queensland weather all year round.”
The project, which was largely funded by the Queensland Government, is the result of more than two years of extensive community consultation, design work and construction.
An official opening of the Plantation Nature Play is anticipated for September 2019.
