REVAMPED LIBRARY A HIT WITH POINT COOK COMMUNITY

Since reopening its doors in September 2018, the Point Cook Library has proven to be a resounding hit with the local community.

The Library has seen more than 220,444 people come through the door, 430,572 items borrowed and nearly 15,000 people attending a library program, since the doors reopened last year.

Wyndham City’s Learning City portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said that the new and improved Library was part of the overall $5.2 million redevelopment of the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, completed to ensure this important community facility kept pace with the needs of residents.

“Since the Point Cook Library reopened; books, DVD’s and other items have been flying off the shelf and the feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive,” Cr Gilligan said.

“less than a month after reopening in September last year, 52 per cent of our collection was out on loan at the one time, including 80 per cent of our picture books.”

“Our busiest month ever was in May this year, where we saw 27,298 people through the door.”

 “To meet the demand and interest in learning at our libraries, two new programs were introduced for adults; Craft and Conversation and Language Café. The Language Café has been so popular we’ve added a second weekly session.”

“We continue to make learning vibrant and interactive. One of the enhancements we’ve made since reopening the doors is the installation of a mural in the children’s book area featuring artwork and text from the picture book Wide Big World written by Maxine Beneba Clarke.”
