A community garden for green thumbs in Coogee

The Coogee Community Memorial Garden will be located at the south end of Rotary Park, near King Street in Coogee. It will feature both public and private growing plots where residents can grow natural, organic food.
A proposal for a community garden was made to the City of Cockburn on 18 November 2018 by a group of passionate residents incorporated as Coogee Community Garden WA.
In July 2019, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) awarded the City the power to lease Rotary Park to the group so community members can begin planting.
The garden will have both environmental and social benefits for the local community said Anton Lees, Manager Park and Environment.
“Community gardens are places where people can meet, share and socialise with other residents and learn from each other,” said Mr Lees. “Being able to grow your own food also allows residents to live more sustainable and healthier lifestyles,” said Mr Lees.
Coogee Community Garden WA hopes the garden will be inspired by Cockburn’s pioneer market gardens and gardeners. Their plans include a commemorative statue and the use of heirloom vegetables and fruits.
A full concept design of the garden is being prepared. Stage one of the works are hoped to begin by November 2019.
