Gannawarra Shire’s children’s services have joined in on Dental Health Week to promote the importance of Eating Well, Brushing Well, Drinking Well, and having teeth checked regularly by a dentist.
As part of the national campaign, running from 5–11 August 2019, children at the Gannawarra Shire Children’s Centre have been practicing and participating in activities that support their oral health.
Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said that children services across the Gannawarra Shire are leading the way when it comes to improving oral health outcomes for local children.
“Our children services are all awarded as part of the Dental Health Services Victoria Smiles4Miles program delivered as a partnership between Council and Northern District Community Health,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“We want all our local children to grow up with healthy smiles and encouraging good brushing, consuming water as the drink of choice and eating healthy foods, like crunchy fruit and vegetables, is a great place to start.”
Northern District Community Health Chief Executive Officer, Mandy Hutchinson said that Dental Health Week is a good reminder to ‘brush up’ on healthy tooth tips.
“Most of us know that we should look after our teeth but we may not know why,” Ms Hutchinson said.
“Good oral health is linked to good overall health. It helps us have reduced levels of pain and suffering, better heart health, less risk of diabetes and provides us with more balanced energy for our day-to-day lives.”
How’s Your Oral Health Tracking? is the theme for Dental Health Week. The campaign encourages Australians to brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, use floss at least once a day, eat healthy foods, reduce sugary drinks, and visit a dentist for regular check-ups.
