Charters Towers Regional Council has released its new Biosecurity Plan for the next 5 years.
The Biosecurity Plan 2019-2024 complies with the Biosecurity Act 2014 which mandates that all local governments prepare and adopt a biosecurity plan for the management of invasive plants and animals within its respective local government area.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said it was important for Council to adopt a new plan to meet the needs of the region.
“This new plan is something we’ve been working on for some time. We’ve consulted with the community through community surveys and through our Rural Industry Advisory Committee.
“The purpose of the Plan is to provide strategic direction for the management of invasive plants and animals within our region. It also outlines a strategy for the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in relation to the control of invasive species on their land.
“This is not just a Council issue, it requires every level of government, industry, land managers and the community to take all reasonable and practical measures to minimise biosecurity risk.”
The Plan is designed to provide a framework that allows prevention and early detection, monitoring and evaluation and to raise public awareness around Invasive Biosecurity Matter.
“We want to ensure that resources are strategically invested in management activities that achieve effective outcomes for the region.
“The aim of the new Plan is to minimise the environmental, economic and social impacts caused by invasive plants and animals,” Mayor Schmidt said.
