Want to reach for the moon and stars?
Well, now you can as part of two free astronomical Ballarat Libraries’ activities taking place to celebrate National Science Week, from 10-18 August.
Destination Moon and Beyond will explain the science required to reach the moon and the space programs that made it all happen.
Presented by Ben Z from Fizzies Education, this session will cover trajectories and orbits to rocketry and materials science along with the space programs, operations and missions of today and tomorrow.
This event will take place on Monday 12 August, from 4.30-5.30pm, at the Ballarat Tech School Federation University SMB Campus, MB John Building, Level 1, 138 Albert Street, Ballarat central.
Suitable for ages 8 and up, this is a co-learning program where parents/carers are required to support their children. Bookings are required for this free event at ballaratlibraries.eventbrite.com.au.
In another event, astrophysics student and Kamilaroi woman Krystal De Napoli will present Aboriginal Astronomy.
Krystal will share with the audience the ways in which Indigenous Australians encode scientific information in their traditions and how this knowledge is passed on from generation to generation.
This all ages event will be held on Friday 16 August, at 6.30pm, at Ballarat Library. Bookings are required for this free event at ballaratlibraries.eventbrite.com.au.
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.
Running each year in August, it features more than 1,000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.
These events attract a wide audience from children to adults, and science amateurs to professionals. Over one million people participate in science events across the nation.
Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.
