A City of Darwin project aimed at improving the safety and visual appeal of the Mall has been completed.
The four month project has seen the installation of bud lights in trees, floodlights and re-lamping throughout the Mall.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he is delighted with the end result. “The Mall is the gateway to our city and the Waterfront, so it’s important that it be welcoming and attractive.”
“The additional lighting City of Darwin has installed improves visibility and overall amenity of the Mall. The extra lighting also addresses concerns raised by the community and retailers regarding pedestrian safety.”
“We believe improvements like these will reduce anti-social behaviour and assist retailers and café owners entice more people back into our city.”
City of Darwin’s 2019/20 budget allocated more than $53M to major projects across Darwin’s city and suburbs, with beautification and public lighting projects a key focus.
Lord Mayor Vatskalis reflected on the next phase of the project “City of Darwin’s 2030 Strategic Plan focusses on creating a cool, clean and green city and to achieve this we will be adding more trees and shrubs in the Mall over the coming months.”
“Our aim is to create a beautiful, vibrant city that reflects our rich cultural history.”
Other projects City of Darwin has budgeted for in 2019/20 include the beautification of Daly Street, footpath and walkway resurfacing and reconstruction, playground refurbishment and suburban beautification.
