Who do you think you are? Find out this National Family History Month!

August is National Family History Month (NFHM) and Cessnock City Library is presenting two FREE workshops on genealogy and family history.

On Thursday 15 August from 10am to 12pm Cessnock Library is presenting Unlocking the mysteries behind ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’.

The television series ‘Who do you think you are?’ has been a global phenomenon, but how do the archivists and historians find the original records they uncover in each episode?  In this workshop we will watch an episode and Council’s Local Studies Librarian Kimberly O’Sullivan will explain how original records are uncovered.    

On Tuesday 20 August between 11am to 12:30pm Kurri Kurri Library will host an ‘Understanding Ancestry’ workshop. Ancestry.com is a wonderful family history tool, but it can be tricky to use. Volunteer, Debbie Rowley loves Ancestry.com and wants to help you get the most out of this resource. This free workshop will help you negotiate your way through Ancestry.com and answer your common research questions.  

Access to Ancestry.com is via a paid subscription, but did you know that if you are a member of Cessnock Library you have free unlimited access to the site with your library card? Cessnock Family History Group also operates from the Local Studies Room at Cessnock Library and they welcome visitors and enquiries.  

Council’s Library Services Co-ordinator, Rose-marie Walters said family history and genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies around the world.  

“There are over 250,000 Australians who are members of family history related organisations and the month has broad appeal across Australia.”
