Liverpool City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to a well-planned town centre for the residents of Middleton Grange.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said Council discussed the issue for almost an hour at its July 31 meeting and reaffirmed its opposition to the scale of development originally proposed.

“The residents are frustrated and we understand that,” Mayor Waller said.

“A town centre for Middleton Grange is long overdue and Council supports an appropriately-sized development to suit the needs of the area.

“Council staff will work with the landowner to come up with an outcome that provides much of the missing infrastructure in Middleton Grange, without burdening the community with too high a density for the site.

“We have also made a commitment to the community that we will keep them informed about the issue, giving them an opportunity to have their say on any amended planning proposal put forward.”

Last December, council withdrew its support for a planning proposal for Middleton Grange Town Centre that included as many as 900 apartments.

Under current controls, Council estimates the site could yield between 300 and 400 dwellings, depending on how much commercial space was proposed for the development.

The minimum number of dwellings required for the site under the Local Environmental Plan is 176. This figure was also identified in the applicant’s 2016 Social Impact Assessment.

“Council also resolved to look for another site for the town centre in Middleton Grange if no application has been lodged for the current site,” Mayor Waller said.
