The Bendigo Writers Festival has enjoyed its most successful event to date attracting a record 5,700 visitors and a 30 per cent increase in box office sales during the three day event from August 9 to 11.
Manager Capital Venues and Events David Lloyd said that he was delighted that so many visitors had enjoyed this year’s festival, which had an impressive line-up of international and Australian writers.
“This year’s festival was bigger and better and had something for everyone.” Mr Lloyd said.
“There was a 30 per cent increase in box office sales compared to last year’s event. The breakdown of our figures has also revealed that 60 per cent of those who attended were from the Greater Bendigo community. It’s a great endorsement to see such strong local support and commitment for the event.
“Over a third came from regional Victorian and Melbourne combined and five per cent from interstate and overseas. Most opted for a three-day pass so they could stay in the city and make the most of the impressive program of events.
“We’ve also adapted to what audiences wanted based on feedback from previous years and now offer better accessibility to move between the venues, which I believe has had a positive effect on visitor numbers.”
Over 100 events and 150 speakers took part in the festival where food and good living were the strong themes.
Highlights included Festival Friday Night at Ulumbarra Theatre with Food Safari presenter Maeve O’Meara who talked about the places, people and dishes that have delighted her in a quest for unique and exotic culinary.
Another highlight and finale was the internationally acclaimed surgeon Munjed Al Muderis who talked about how hope and courage could change lives.
The Bendigo Writers Festival is an initiative of the City of Greater Bendigo in partnership with La Trobe University Bendigo, and is managed by Capital Venues and Events.
