Kick start for Frankston art

Budding local artists will off their incredible creations at the Frankston Arts Centre Open Exhibition 2019. 

Frankston City Council supports the annual exhibition which gives breakout artists a chance to showcase and sell their works to the public at a professional venue. 

This year artists were asked to explore the role and portrayal of ‘Women in Art’ from a personal, mythical, social, historical, aesthetic or political perspective. 

The theme was inspired by the 2019 theatre season at Frankston Arts Centre, which has a strong emphasis on women and their stories. 

Submissions closed last week and organisers received 93 entries including paintings, sculptures, quilts, photographs, and animations. 

McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery curator Simon Lawrie judged the entries. 

Frankston City Council Mayor Michael O’Reilly congratulated Karina Laird, for her photo, Peluquera, at a special launch event on Friday night (August 9). 

Mayor O’Reilly presented Karina with her prize, which included $1000 and an opportunity to exhibit and hold an opening event at Frankston Arts Centre next year. 

“Sharing their work with an audience is a crucial first step in kick starting any artist’s career,” Mayor O’Reilly said. 

“Council is so proud to provide this opportunity and of the amazing works of art produced in this city.”

The exhibition is open to the public 9am-5pm, Tuesday to Friday and 9am-2pm on Saturdays.
