Three City of Darwin sporting ovals will be lit up as part of a tender for new lighting at three major sporting ovals - Gardens Oval, Bagot Oval and Nightcliff Oval.

The Sports Oval Lighting Project is a collaboration between the NT Government and City of Darwin, with the Northern Territory Government investing several million dollars into the project.

The tender to design and construct new lights at the ovals is due to close 23 August, 2019, with innovative lighting solutions being sought and local businesses encouraged to bid.

The Sports Oval Lighting Project aims to increase opportunities for the community to participate in sport.

“This is a significant project,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis “and a reflection on how two levels of government can work together to produce great outcomes for our community.”

The Darwin community is supportive of the project, with community consultation showing 94% of survey respondents backing the project.

“City of Darwin is delighted to have this level of community support for the project.”

“Once complete this project will enable sports training and matches to be played at cooler times of the day and provide opportunities for increased participation.”

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture Lauren Moss reiterated the importance of continued investment by the NT Government to help deliver positive outcomes to enhance and foster our vibrant communities.

“Territorians love their sport which is why we continue to invest in quality sporting infrastructure across the NT.

“Our investment in lighting these three busy ovals will allow Territorians to play their chosen sport in the cooler evenings, increase availability for various sports to use the ovals and grow participation particularly for juniors, women and girls.”

Local businesses will be given preference through a weighted tender system.
