The Tasmanian Government is conducting a major review of Tasmania’s Local Government Legislation Framework.
The Review was announced in June 2018 and will involve extensive consultation with the local government sector, the community and affected stakeholders. Further information, including on the scope of the Review, can be found from the About the Review page.
Phase 2 - Reform Directions Paper ReleasedOn 3 July 2019, the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Mark Shelton MP, released the Tasmanian Government’s Reform Directions Paper, outlining the proposed reforms to Tasmania’s local government legislation framework. The Minister’s full speech is available to view here.
The proposed Reform Directions have been informed by research, practices in other Australian jurisdictions, feedback and submissions from Phase 1, as well as discussions and advice from the Review Reference Group.
A multiple-choice survey has been developed to rate the level of support for each Reform Direction in Parts A-F of the Paper. If you would like to rate reforms in multiple parts of the Paper, please take the full survey.

The survey can also be downloaded and submitted by email or post.
Fact SheetsShort fact sheets outlining the key issues raised and the Reform Directions for each topic are available below. Fact sheets are included to address out-of-scope issues and other matters raised during Phase 1.

Consultation SessionsConsultation sessions for the proposed reform directions are being held around the State in July and August 2019. Sessions are being run for elected members, local government staff and the public. Sessions will be facilitated and will include the opportunity to ask questions or seek further information.
