The Serpentine community now have access to basketball and netball courts after the Serpentine tennis courts were upgraded to multi-use courts last month.
The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale was successful in receiving a Sport Australia’s Move It AUS – Community Sport Infrastructure grant in March, with final work on the courts completed last month.
The $15,158 grant allowed two of the four tennis courts, located at the Clem Kentish hall and oval precinct, to be turned into one basketball and one netball court while still offering tennis across all four courts.
This involved the installation of netball and basketball rings to create the first recreational netball and basketball court in Serpentine.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said it was important that the Shire provided the community with as many sporting options as possible to meet the demand of the Shire’s growing population.
“It was great that our Shire was successful in our grant application and that we could upgrade these facilities to multi-use courts,” she said.
“Previously the Serpentine community only had access to tennis, football, cricket and skateboarding facilities.
“The addition of basketball and netball facilities is a huge boost.
“The multi-use courts will now provide more opportunities for our high Serpentine youth population to engage in a range of recreational activities.”
