Free showerheads and mulch for water savings

Armidale residents will have double the opportunity for water savings when the Armidale Waste Management Facility and Guyra Recycling & Transfer Station hold another free mulch session this Saturday and Sunday.

The free mulch collection, being held between noon and 4.30pm on each day, will also be an opportunity for residents to swap their existing showerhead for a more water efficient model.

The showerhead exchange and free mulch collection are being offered to help save water during the region’s ongoing drought.

“Combining the two programs is helping residents to save water inside the house and to give their gardens a boost during the current restrictions on watering,” Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.

It follows a highly successful mulch giveaway at the two waste facilities in May.

“Mulch is great for water saving as it can reduce evaporation from soil by up to 70%. The current Level 4 and Level 5 water restrictions ban the use of hoses and irrigation systems to water gardens, so it’s more important than ever to save as much moisture in our gardens as possible,” Councillor Murray said.

“We’re inviting residents to bring their utes, trailers or buckets to the Armidale or Guyra waste facilities to collect up to two cubic metres of free mulch.”

It will be limited to one visit per household and deliveries will not be available for the free supply.
