Parking review to look at all options

Hobart businesses will be consulted as part of a review of parking in the Hobart city centre.
City of Hobart General Manager Nick Heath said all options were on the table and open for discussion under a broad-scale review that will look at the effectiveness of current parking incentives, use of technology and the feasibility of new services, such as a park-and-ride shuttle operating at the fringe of the city.
“Just to be clear, we’re not proposing any particular changes at this time,” Mr Heath said. “What we are doing is acknowledging there are many areas of city parking that need further consideration as to whether or not they are effective in the current climate.
“We will be seeking input from the business community and other stakeholders. We need to make sure the CBD stays competitive with other shopping areas and the needs of businesses are being met.
“But, what we do know is that existing parking infrastructure is under pressure from demand and we need to start thinking more broadly about the parking situation in our city and how it can be improved.”
Mr Heath said the costs of providing parking also needed to be taken into consideration.
“We have a user-pays system for parking, which takes pressure off of ratepayers, while contributing to the maintenance of infrastructure and services that are accessed by visitors to our city centre. We need to consider financial implications as part of the review process.”
The parking review is looking at nine key areas:
early bird parking pensioner voucher parking scheme 90-minute free parking in short term car parks §on-street rates (floating rates) §off-street parking technologies hours of operation of car parks peripheral parking (commuter park-and-ride shuttle service) commuter parking in inner-city areas. §off-street, off-peak parking demand management solutions to encourage the spread of shopping and trade, including late night trading and night-shift worker safetyOnce the review is completed, a report containing recommendations will be presented to the Council.
