$3.65 million secured for Kurri Kurri commercial centre upgrade

Cessnock City Council has secured $3.65 million under the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Resources for Regions Fund to commence the Commercial Centre Masterplan for Kurri Kurri.  

The Masterplan was developed in consultation with the community to meet the evolving needs of Kurri Kurri residents. The upgrades will deliver improved facilities to the community encouraging redevelopment, visitation, accessibility and economic activity.  

Council will also contribute around $520,000 to the project bringing the total funding to $4.17 million for the Stage 1 works.  

Stage 1 of the Commercial Centre Masterplan includes the design and upgrade of a length of Lang Street, Kurri Kurri which consists of:

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it’s a significant amount of funding for a vital project.  

“These upgrades will retain the character of the Kurri Kurri commercial centre whilst catering for increased growth in the surrounding areas. I look forward to seeing the plans and designs.”  

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the Kurri Kurri project was one of 11 infrastructure projects awarded funding under Round 6 of the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions program earlier this year.  

“The Resources for Regions program recognises the important contribution mining-related communities make to the state, helps to strengthen local infrastructure and diversify their economies,” Mr Barilaro said.   “This planning and subsequent works will provide better transport links, new recreational opportunities and improved accessibility for both locals and visitors, as well as increase the attractiveness of Kurri Kurri as a place to invest.   

"This project is part of the $294 million investment Resources for Regions has made into 65 projects since the program’s inception in 2012.”  

Council will now undertake an extensive design and consultation process. The work is planned to begin next year.
