Work starts on Redlynch intersection upgrade

The $2.4 million upgrade of the busy intersection at the corner of Redlynch Intake and Kamerunga roads, outside the Red Beret Hotel at Redlynch, started today (Monday 19 August).

Green spaces, a stone feature wall and new timber decking are part of the upgrades that will address road safety concerns for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Division 6 Councillor Linda Cooper said preserving the character of the precinct was an important consideration when formulating a concept that would also address safety.

“This was a case of Council listening to ratepayers and delivering infrastructure they will be proud to have in their community,” Cr Cooper said.

“We had extensive community consultation and overwhelmingly people wanted to create a green village feel, while improving safety.

“The idea was to use vegetation, improved street scaping and traffic islands to naturally slow traffic through the intersection, while still having that village atmosphere.”

An external timber deck pedestrian pathway will be constructed at the Red Beret Hotel, which means the public will no longer have to pass through the hotel for pedestrian access from Kamerunga Road to Redlynch Intake Road.

A new feature stone wall, irrigated gardens, heritage style fencing, solar speed check signs, additional lighting and a new pedestrian crossing on Kamerunga Road are among the upgrades.

A 30km/h speed limit will be in place once the works are complete.

Motorists are advised to avoid the intersection during construction if possible.

Temporary lane closures will be required at times and traffic delays are expected during construction.

Noise and dust is also expected, and car parking bays near the work sites will have to be temporarily closed at times. There will also be temporary disruptions to driveways at times.

The bus stop on the northern side of Kamerunga Rd will also have to be temporarily relocated approximately 70 metres east.
