Roger Vistarini, who has volunteered his time to help men overcome drug and alcohol addiction, was named Wyndham Citizen of the Year 2019, last night (16th August).
At the Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards Gala Presentation Evening, Roger was presented with the prestigious title celebrating the achievements of some of Wyndham’s many incredible volunteers.
Wyndham City Mayor Cr Mia Shaw said Roger was acknowledged for his outstanding commitment to community health and wellbeing for the time he dedicated to helping men transform their lives at the residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Hoppers Crossing, Dreambuilders Transformations.
“For the past four years Roger has volunteered extensive hours to help create a safe and supportive environment for men to recover from addictions,” Cr Shaw said.
“He is known for going above and beyond in building relationships and making a significant difference in helping people to rebuild their lives.”
“Roger’s volunteer efforts help men overcome huge obstacles to reconnect with family and employment and develop healthier lifestyles.”
“He has held many volunteer roles in the organisation over this time including a class facilitator, house supervisor, case manager and most recently as campus director.”
“Roger also actively participates in and supports the fundraising efforts of the program through its annual Steps for Recovery Walk, Black Tie Dinner and Pop Up Oppe Shoppe and is involved in its local business fundraising events.”
Category winners were acknowledged for their achievements and presented with their awards.
Erum Ali took the Community Engagement award for her contribution to building welcoming and inclusive communities by volunteering as a coordinator for the Welcome Dinner Project, arranging more than 50 community dinners and picnics, facilitator training sessions and membership drives at festivals and events across Wyndham and the broader Western metropolitan region.
The Environment or Sustainability award went to Lisa Field for her work building environmental and sustainability awareness in Wyndham, such as the organising activities to improve the health of Werribee River.
George Donaldson, who has been volunteering at Werribee Visitor Information Centre for the past 15 years, won the Arts, Culture or Tourism Award.
He provides excellent frontline customer service to visitors and shares his knowledge of the many wonderful destinations and experiences available in Wyndham.
Gaurav Malhotra scooped the Sports and Recreation title for demonstrating exceptional commitment and making a significant impact as a volunteer for the Point Cook Cricket Club.
Emily Lacey is 2019’s Young Volunteer of the Year, acknowledged for her dedication as volunteer coach and committee member for the Hoppers Crossing Netball Association.
Headspace Werribee Youth Advocacy Group are the Community Group of the Year for its significant contribution to improving the health outcomes of young people in Wyndham.
Winners received a trophy and the opportunity to direct a donation to a charity or not-for-profit community group of their choice.
