The first of three major upgrades in the Sandringham precinct will get underway next week with work to start on a $4.2m renovation of Sandringham Library to create more room to study, read and take part in library programs, and deliver a new maternal and child health centre.
More than 3,500 people visit the library every week and take part in story time activities, book clubs, poetry groups, author talks, workshops, computer training and school holiday programs. The renovation will increase the floor size of the library by 300 square metres within the existing footprint of the building.
During construction 17 car parks in front of the library on the west side of Waltham Street between Chalmers Avenue and Abbott Street will be closed to allow for the storage of construction materials and equipment. The closure of the library will improve availability of parking in the vicinity and is expected to balance out the short term loss of parking.
A temporary ‘express’ library facility is operating from 92 Station Street Sandringham. All borrowed items should be returned to the express library or any of our other library branches at Hampton, Beaumaris and Brighton.
To make way for the expanded library and new maternal and child health centre the Sandringham Life Activities Club has moved to the Masonic Hall at 23 Abbott St Sandringham and the Sandringham and District Historical Society has moved to 62 Bay Road Sandringham.
Maternal and child health clients will be seen by nurses at our Hampton and Beaumaris centres until construction is complete. The library and maternal and child health centre are expected to open in May 2020.
Meanwhile designs to create a village square, improve pedestrian access and the appearance of the shopping precinct are being reworked and we expect to be in a position to consult the community on these designs in October.
