Council’s Urunga Boardwalk Upgrade Project is about to begin to ensure one of the best boardwalks on the east coast is performing at its best for the busy school holiday period.
The works, which will see 400 metres of original timber decking replaced with 385 lineal metres of Envirowalk fibreglass mesh, are due to commence Monday 09th September 2019 and will continue for three weeks until the 27th September, weather permitting.
Bellingen Shire Council Mayor, Cr Dominic King, said the works would begin at the Reflections Caravan Park end of the boardwalk and would require the temporary closure of the boardwalk to pedestrians between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.
“Given the boardwalk’s popularity, it’s important that it remains open for public use outside of these hours and during the weekends, and I’m sure everyone will understand that our crews are working towards completing the upgrade before school holidays start.”
Mayor, Cr Dominic King said council had worked hard to secure $109,000 in funding during Round Two of the Stronger Country Communities Fund to fund and deliver the upgrade works.
“It’s a win-win for our community when we can deliver projects that improve existing community infrastructure that are also tourism assets which attract additional investment and economic growth to the region.”
“That’s why we also prioritised an investment of $225,000 comprising council and grant funding to complete dredging and foreshore protection works to progress the Urunga Tidal Pool Project, which will reinstate a tidal swimming facility within the Bellinger Kalang River Estuary,” Mayor King said.
“This new Tidal Pool will be a wonderful addition to the improved amenities and attractions of the immediate area which will also include our current boardwalk upgrade works and the new cycleway network.”
