Second Hand Saturday is back

Kyogle Council will once again take part in Second Hand Saturday.

Second Hand Saturday is a free event held on the same day across the region, where residents can hold garage sales with free advertising and where savvy shoppers can hunt for bargains across the whole region

The event, aimed at encouraging people to re-use and recycle goods, will be held on Saturday 28 September, with participants able to hold another garage sale for their unsold items the weekend after on 5 October.

Householders are encouraged to register to hold their own garage sale at home, or coordinate a joint garage sale in their street, or with their local school, preschool, community organisation or Church. It is free to register, and garage sales are listed for free in participating newspapers, and the Second Hand Saturday app.

Second Hand Saturday coordinator Linda Tohver said garage sales remained hugely popular despite the increase of on-line selling platforms.

“There’s something truly special about garage sales – meeting new people, the exchange of stories, the joy of finding a special treasure or a great bargain,” she said.

“There’s also the knowledge that you are contributing to a better environment. “

The reuse aspect of Second Hand Saturday is truly what drives the event – for example, during the 2017 and 2018 events, more than 4,000 wheelie bins worth of second hand items exchanged hands and participants said around 40 per cent of this had been destined for landfill.

Second Hand Saturday is coordinated by North East Waste and participating councils and funded by the NSW EPA’s Waste Less Recycle More initiative.
