For one night only, Wyndham City’s Council Chambers will be transformed into a citizens’ assembly made especially for the people of Wyndham.
Arts and Heritage portfolio holder Cr Tony Hooper said Congress was a platform to celebrate diverse voices from our local community while championing our collective right to be seen and heard.
“Congress is more than a performance, it’s a collective of personal visions, public declarations, shared experiences and communities’ concerns,” Cr Hooper said.
“The show connects eight Wyndham residents from all walks of life with eight professional wordsmiths and together they create a series of “first speeches”, which are delivered as a one-time only performance.
“These wordsmiths and speakers have been curated across a spectrum of diversities to present a representative slice of the people of Wyndham then, now and into our future.”
“This is the first time Council Chambers has been used for a theatrical performance.”
“The space was chosen because it represents a place where civic and community participation happens, and Congress is a creative way to express civic participation.”
Participating Speaker, Damon Paraham, said he hoped that people could learn what it means to be Australian from a unique perspective.
“I'm a second-generation immigrant of Pasifika background and I really believe that my perspective will have something new for all types of Australian's to learn from,” Mr Paraham said.
Participating Wordsmith, Fatima Measham, said Congress was not just for making art but for being in a society where everyone is seen, accepted and elevated.
“Congress is going to start conversations that are essential to keeping the Wyndham community robust, honest and just,” Ms Measham said.
Congress will be held at Wyndham City Council Chambers, 45 Princes Highway on Saturday 7th September at 7pm.
