Inaugural Sustainable Living(stone) Expo encourages residents to become more eco-conscious

We all know that we need to protect the environment, but it can be overwhelming knowing where to start.
That’s why Council has partnered up with local agencies and organisations to showcase some of the sustainability initiatives and projects occurring throughout the Shire, at the inaugural Sustainable Living(stone) Expo on 29 September 2019 at Beaman Park in Yeppoon.
Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton said whether it’s tips on waste disposal and recycling, reducing our power consumption, or reducing your carbon footprint by walking or riding short journeys instead of driving, there are plenty of options the average household can take part in to become more sustainable.
“Council is thrilled to be launching this new and exciting event for the community, to help spread the message that everyone can contribute towards making our planet – and in particular our region, a sustainable and environmentally-conscious place to live,” Cr Hutton said.
“The event will feature stallholders including Fitzroy Basin Association, Capricorn Coast Landcare Group Inc, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), Bicycle Users Group (BUG) and Tangaroa Blue Foundation, to name only a few.
“We’ve also been very fortunate to secure TV presenter and one of Planet Ark’s co-founders, Jon Dee, as well as nutritionist, film maker and bestselling author of the book, Changing Habits, Changing Lives, Cyndi O’Meara, as the event’s key guest speakers.
“Council would like to sincerely thank all of the agencies and organisations involved in bringing this event to fruition. We look forward to welcoming the community to learn about a wide variety of tips and tricks on how to have a sustainable household through interactive activities, workshops and guest speakers.”
Waste Management Councillor Adam Belot said environmental entertainers – The King and Queen of Green, will also perform on the day, educating audiences about reducing waste to landfill by composting and recycling.
“This event has been specifically designed to cater for everybody, from the youngsters to our senior residents, everyone can play their part to help improve our environment and reduce their impact with simple, small and achievable steps,” Cr Belot said.
“Council officers will be available on the day to speak with residents or provide helpful advice on sustainability.”
