Councillors approve Mackay Park concept

The Batemans Bay Regional Aquatic, Arts and Leisure Centre will move to the detailed design stage after Council approved recommendations to lodge a development application for the facility, at the council meeting of Tuesday 27 August.

Eurobodalla Council’s director of planning Lindsay Usher said the community could now get a feel for the design thanks to a video walkthrough of the combined aquatic and theatre space.

“The concept approved by council is the result of extensive community feedback. It takes the best from three alternate designs we put to the public earlier this year.” Mr Usher said.

“The aquatic centre will include a heated eight-lane 25 metre lap pool, and water-program, leisure and learn-to-swim pools, plus a waterslide.

“The theatre is a flexible performance space with retractable seating for 350, with attached arts, performance and amenities rooms.”

Mr Usher said the next phase involved lodging a development application for determination by Council and the NSW Government’s Southern Regional Planning Panel, with a detailed design finalised prior to a tender process for the construction of the centre.

Funding of $51M has been secured for development of the facility – $25M from the Australian Government and $26M from the NSW Government, along with $4M committed by Council to progress the project.

Three councillors, Pat McGinlay, Phil Constable and Anthony Mayne did not vote for the recommendations, and Mayor Liz Innes was absent.
