Castaways Sculpture Awards Approaching Fast

Mayor Barry Sammels said it was exciting to see participating artists, including 2017 Alcoa Major Award winner Brett Todman, work creatively with recycled components for the large scale outdoor exhibition.

“For more than a decade Castaways has given professional and emerging artists as well as schools the chance to demonstrate their creative skills,” Mayor Sammels said.

“The City is delighted to be hosting Castaways again in 2019 and is looking forward to seeing some outstanding pieces of work.

“Previous Alcoa Major Award winner Brett Todman is participating again in 2019, alongside co-artist Lisa Pensabene. The pair are working with aluminium to create their sculpture, which is sure to captivate visitors when the exhibition opens in October.

“As a 100% recyclable material aluminium is one of the key products set to feature in the Castaways Sculpture Awards thanks to the creative potential it offers artists, and the City is delighted to welcome Alcoa as a major sponsor again in 2019.”

Alcoa Kwinana Refinery Manager Mark Zaborowski said he is pleased to be partnering with the City of Rockingham for the 12th consecutive year to bring this exciting local exhibition to the community for all to enjoy in 2019.

“It’s great to see our final product – aluminium – being used in some of the sculptures this year,” Mr Zaborowski said.

“I’m particularly proud that Alcoa’s support is again giving local primary schools the opportunity to participate in the Up-Cycle Artist in Residence program for sculpture development.”

Castaways will run from Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November 2019 and will comprise three simultaneous exhibitions.

The main Castaways Sculpture Awards Exhibition will be held at the Rockingham Beach Foreshore alongside the Schools Exhibition, while the new Maquette and Small Sculpture Exhibition will be held at the nearby Rockingham Arts Centre.

The nine day event returns in 2019 after completion of stage one of the $15.7 million Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation, and will be part of a special two-day Foreshore Celebration taking place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October.
