Live broadcasting of Ballarat City Council meetings has attracted 1498 views since it began six meetings ago.

There have also been 536 views of archived meeting footage, resulting in 2034 views in total.

The first meeting was live broadcast on 15 May this year, with 12 June, 19 June, 26 June, 3 July and 31 July meetings also able to be viewed from home, rather than the Ballarat Town Hall Council Chamber.

The first meeting on 15 May attracted the highest number of viewers with 487.

However, the 3 July meeting – which featured the Miners Rest Township Plan and the Ballarat Clarendon College amendment and planning permit - also rated well, with 269 viewers.

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh said it was fantastic to see so many people tuning in to Council meetings from the comfort of their own homes.

“This was exactly why we introduced live broadcasting – to ensure people who want to see Council meetings in action, but who can’t attend for whatever reason, are still able to see our decision making in action,” Cr McIntosh said.

“Live broadcasting means there have been 2000 more people able to see the robust debate and discussions that take place in the Council chamber every three weeks.

“It’s terrific that people who may not be able to attend meetings are able to see democracy in action just by turning on their computer screens.”
