Community groups benefit from $500,000 in grants

Close to half a million dollars is set to be invested in a number of programs aimed at making a difference in Canterbury-Bankstown, as part of the 2019-20 Community Grants and Events Sponsorship Program.

Mayor Khal Asfour said CBCity has one of the largest annual Community Grants allocations in NSW, with $496,935 made available this year alone.

"We received 189 applications from community groups and organisations, requesting a total of more than $1.3 million," he said.

"Of those, 140 were successful in receiving a grant of up to $15,000.

"The successful applicants were selected based on how their project would benefit residents, particularly our most vulnerable, such as the elderly, people with disability, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

"Among the community groups and organisations that will receive funding are neighbourhood and community centres, church groups, seniors groups, youth and family service providers, ethnic organisations, and recreation and sporting clubs."

Among the successful applicants was the Chinese Parents Association for Children With Disabilities, which will use the funding to run a series of legal aid workshops for carers and parents with children with disabilities, and provide job-readiness training for local people with disability.

Over the past 22 years, more than $10 million has been provided to community groups and organisations through Council’s Community Grants and Events Sponsorship Program.

A presentation ceremony for the successful applicants will be hosted at Bryan Brown Theatre and Function Centre, on Tuesday 17 September, starting at 2pm.
