Leisure and Aquatic Strategic Plan

The City of Canterbury Bankstown has adopted a new strategic plan, which will help guide the upgrading and maintenance of Leisure and Aquatic Centres for at least the next 15 years.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the plan was developed following a three-year independent review of the City’s leisure and aquatic facilities, which included extensive community consultation.

“This strategic plan provides us with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of our City’s leisure and aquatic services,” he said.

“Our leisure and aquatic facilities were built decades ago, at a time when the community’s needs were much different than they are today and will be in the future.

“As they currently stand, they are outdated and place a significant financial burden on Council to maintain them.

“But, more importantly, these facilities and the programs they offer are not meeting the needs and expectations of the community.”

Under the strategic plan:

New leisure and aquatic facilities are scheduled for construction at Revesby and Canterbury;The existing Birrong and Roselands Leisure and Aquatic Centres will be upgraded;A new water splash park and enhanced play space will be constructed at Roberts Park, and Greenacre Leisure and Aquatic Centre closed; andA new community facility will be constructed at Thurina Park, Villawood, with the closure of Wran Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

“Importantly, the Wran will not be closed until we have completed the new facility at Thurina Park,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Obviously, we would love to build a pool in every suburb but it’s just not possible. These decisions were not made lightly and were based on current usage data and the unsustainable costs being met by ratepayers each year”.
