The Yass Valley community will benefit from an upgrade to Walker Park sporting complex, thanks to new funding from a Sport Australia Move It AUS Community Sport Infrastructure Grant.
The $500,000 grant will see improvements made to pedestrian safety, parking options and sports amenities. Local user groups have generously contributed $18,000 towards the project with Yass Valley Council contributing $50,000 to fund the remaining cost of the extensive upgrade.
Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey, says that the funding plays an essential role in maintaining facilities and supporting a stronger and healthier community.
“The Walker Park Sporting Complex is extremely popular amongst our local sporting groups who often use the facilities during the week and over the weekend,” Mayor Abbey said.
“The improvements made to the complex will benefit all user groups and ensures that the facility can be used by our community for many years to come.”
The first stage of upgrades will begin week commencing Monday, 19 August with a new carpark being constructed adjacent to the level three playing field, these works are scheduled to be completed by mid-September, weather permitting.
The Australian Government and Sport Australia are helping to get Australians more active in their own communities by investing more than $100 million in local sport infrastructure projects, as part of the Move It AUS Community Sport Infrastructure Grant program.
