I was invited this week to present certificates to the latest local groups who were successful in gaining a share of the $325,300 available in the latest round of Council’s Community Capital Infrastructure Grants Program.
These grants always show what a lively, engaged community we all have the joy of living in. There’s so much going on at the grassroots level to improve our whole way of life.
We had a record 26 applications this time round so the successful 17 sports and community groups did exceptionally well to win their grants.
Well done all.
Fusion Fest
I was also reminded this week how blessed we are to live in a university city when I went along to SCU’s Fusion Fest.
It was an amazing celebration of the huge number of nationalities who go to the uni. The atmosphere was fantastic, just so positive and happy.
With the fabric of our community – and the university’s – constantly changing, and new cultures adding their unique gift to the city, we can be very proud that Coffs Harbour and its important institutions like SCU celebrate our growing cultural diversity.
Another World Class Facility
A local that really deserves some recognition is Peter Saxby for being the face of squash here in Coffs Harbour and for putting the city squarely on the map in the wider sports world.
I was asked to welcome the players and fans to the North Coast Open at Peter’s facility in Korora recently and I was blown away to discover that this is the only tournament in Australia to be a World Qualification Tournament and one of only seven such events around the world.
The winners of the Open could be heading to Egypt or Qatar for the World Championships.
Korora one day, Egypt or Qatar the next. Yet another reason to be proud of living in beautiful Coffs Harbour.
Happy Birthday C.ex
Congratulations C.ex Coffs for reaching the ripe old age of 70 – and celebrating with a facelift!
The club has really stood the test of time and I was reminded at the 70th anniversary celebrations of what a wonderful job it does in supporting the community through sponsoring events and having its staff volunteer their time to help others. Well done.
