Glenwood’s gateway

Glenwood residents now have a bold new sculpture marking the entrance to their community thanks to a joint project by Blacktown City Council and Glenwood High School.

Blacktown City Mayor Stephen Bali MP said the sculpture, erected on the corner of Sorrento Drive and Sunnyholt Road, was a positive reflection of the local community.

“The sculpture would not have been possible without the creative input from the students who were involved in the project right from the design and concept stages,” Mayor Bali said.

The late Councillor Leo Kelly, OAM, and Councillor Julie Griffiths were also involved in the concept of the Glenwood gateway which began in 2016.

“The new gateway to Glenwood forms part of the legacy of former Mayor Leo Kelly,” Mayor Bali said.

“At the time, Council officers liaised directly with the local community and the school students to ensure the design was a reflection of the area.”

The sculptured entry sign is in the shape of a leaf reflecting the natural surroundings of Glenwood.

Glenwood High School Principal, Sonja Anderson, said the project had been a “magnificent opportunity” for the students involved.

“These students were in Year 9 when they first became involved in the design and coordination of the gateway project as part of a school based program looking at ways to improve their connection with their community,” Ms Anderson said.

“In 2016 the students gained the support of Councillor Kelly, who loved the students’ designs and ideas. The students, who are now in Year 12, learned a valuable lesson in how working together can produce positive outcomes for a local community.”
