Multiple award winners announced for 2019 Northern Beaches Art Prize

Mark Haynes and teenager Micah Lihachov were the names on everyone’s lips after the second round of major award winners were announced at the 2019 Northern Beaches Art Prize.

Mr Haynes snared a cheque for $4000 as top Senior pick in the Waste-to-Art category for Migrating Humpback Whale, with 18-year-old Lihachov judged the yardstick in the Youth category, receiving $1500 for her award-winning entry Ophelia of Salvation Creek.

Ms Lihachov has also been a major Northern Beaches Art Prize winner in previous years, using her prizemoney to visit overseas galleries as a source of artistic inspiration.

Mayor Michael Regan paid tribute to all the winners and entrants across the multiple award categories this year.

“The Northern Beaches Art Prize continues to grow each year and the calibre in 2019 was amazing.

“I offer a hearty congratulations to all the talented entrants and particularly those who took out awards,’’ the Mayor said.

Other Waste to Art category standouts included Junior Winner Cameron Ingle for Wave Vase Collection, Francesco Petrolo for Resilence (Honourable Mention) and Paul McGrath for Aquatic Reserve (Encouragement Award).

Spencer Hole’s Koala Chic was the choice for Youth Junior Winner (10-14), with Senior and Junior Honourable Mentions for Bree Slarke (Equilibrium) and Angus Fisher (Dawn on Kent Street) respectively.

Rounding out the prize winners were Senior and Junior Encouragement Award victors Erin Hannan (Dad’s Moe) and Fletcher Hole (Biker Rhino).

The Northern Beaches Art Prize is being staged at the Creative Space in North Curl Curl.

Entry to the exhibition is free, with opening hours daily 10am-4pm until Sunday 8 September, where the People’s Choice award will be announced.
