The ukulele is taking off as a quick and easy way to learn how to play music with others.

Viral videos by virtuosos like Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Taimane Gardner and Jake Shimabukuro have made the little instrument (its name means “jumping flea” in Hawai’ian) more popular than ever.

Corangamite Shire students can learn how to create and share music together with Woody’s Ukulele Kids Show these school holidays.

“I love it when parents come along too and play music with their kids,” Woody said.

“This show tells the story of a girl, Jasmina, who learns to overcome her troubles through musical expression.

“The show has a ukulele workshop embedded into it so everyone can learn to play along - kids and parents.

“Kids are the soundtrack of this show. Each child and parent gets to play one of my ukuleles.”

Council Economic Development and Events Officer Tammy Young said Woody had loads of experience delivering music programs, teaching in the classroom and performing on the national festival circuit.

“His main focus is to make lessons fun as he helps students learn how to listen to music, improvise, play with others and express themselves musically,” she said.

“He aims to prove to students that through they can play music if they want to.”

The one-hour show will be at the Theatre Royal in Camperdown on Wednesday 25 September from 10 am.

It will cost is $5 per child and bookings can be made by calling us on 5593 7100.
