Koondrook residents are encouraged to assist Gannawarra Shire Council with the development of the Koondrook Flood Study and Levee Assessment.
Council has commenced the process of developing the Koondrook Township Flood Study, which will examine the potential impact of flood events on the township of Koondrook, as well as assess and resolve flood mitigation measures.
“Given that there have been significant flood mitigation works carried out in the floodplains and tributaries on the New South Wales side of the Murray River to protect agricultural land, we need to consider the consequences of these works and the effects on the Koondrook township,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“The levees that protect Koondrook are constructed to an unknown standard. Given the age of the levees they have not been built to meet requirements for secure township protection , as they are not much higher than the flood level and do not provide adequate freeboard.”
To assist the flood study steering committee in gaining information for the development of the study, maps identifying levees already in existence and the areas protected by these structures are available to view at the Mates Royal Hotel (corner Main and Keene streets) and the Koondrook Post Office (86a Main Street).
“Nobody knows Koondrook better than the locals who live there, so if you have photos, recollections, measurements or anything else you think might be helpful in the development of the Koondrook Township Flood Study, please add these details to the maps and note sheets on public display,” Mayor Learmonth said.
“Alternatively, if you would like to provide your input into the development of the Koondrook Township Flood Study, please phone Council on (03) 5450 9333.”
The development of the Koondrook Township Flood Study is made possible thanks to a $100,000 commitment from Emergency Management Victoria’s 2017/18 Natural Disaster Resilience Grant Scheme.
