Dog owners urged to pick up after their pets

Central Highlands Regional Council is urging dog owners to pick up after their pets in a bid to keep the region’s public spaces free of dog waste.

Coordinator Ranger Services Brett Keys said parks and gardens crews had reported an increase in dog waste, particularly in the Emerald Botanic Gardens.

‘There are many reasons why people should pick up their dog’s waste,’ Mr Keys said.

‘First of all, it’s the law and a common courtesy towards our fellow residents, staff maintaining the gardens and our many tourists.

‘Whether it’s a family wanting to sit down for a picnic or our staff mowing the lawn, nobody enjoys encountering dog waste.

‘It’s not only an unpleasantry, the waste can host diseases and parasites that can infect other animals and humans.

‘This becomes an issue particularly around playgrounds where there are a lot of inquisitive children.’

Mr Keys said it is an unnecessary expense to pick up waste and increasing amounts can cause further damages to lawns in gardens and parks.

‘If you forget a bag, council provides bag dispensers at most entrances of the Emerald Botanic Gardens. It’s your responsibility to plan ahead for your pet’s toilet needs.

‘Your dog can’t pick up after itself, it’s part of your duty of care for your animal.’

Mr Keys also reminded owners that dogs should be kept on a lead at all times when in public places.
