(4/9/2019) Nominations open for Community Citizen of the Year awards

The City of Fremantle is encouraging people to nominate an outstanding member, group or event for the 2020 Community Citizen of the Year awards.

Nominations are open in four categories: Citizen of the Year; Citizen of the Year – Youth, for people under 25; Citizen of the Year – Senior, for people over 65; and the Active Citizenship award for groups or events.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the Community Citizen of the Year awards recognised and rewarded individuals and organisations that have demonstrated active citizenship and qualities of leadership, inspiration and community participation.

“We are lucky to have many champions in Freo who dedicate their time and effort to supporting our community,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“These prestigious awards provide a great opportunity to thank our local heroes for their outstanding contribution to community and for making Freo an even better place.

“With your nomination, these incredible and inspiring role models who live or work in our community can get the recognition they deserve.”

Nominating someone is really easy, simply jump online and fill out a nomination form. Nominees should live or work principally within the City of Fremantle. Regard is given to the nominee’s achievements during the current year, as well as their past achievements and ongoing contribution to the community.

Outstanding contribution and community service can include areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, social inclusion or any other area that enhances community life.

Earlier this year, First Nations Homelessness Project and Advocacy Service Founder and Director Jennifer Kaeshagen was recognised as the Fremantle Citizen of the Year. Ronelle Brossard, a nurse and midwife who was a major champion and catalyst for establishing The Meeting Place, was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year, while Sally Gamble who works with the Fremantle Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and volunteers her time with the Fremantle PCYC was acknowledged as the Youth Citizen of the Year. The volunteer–run Fremantle Men’s Community Shed won the Active Citizenship award.

Nominations close on 31 October, with the awards to be presented at the City’s citizenship ceremony on 26 January.
