Balonne Shire Council has released its vision of the possible redevelopment of the St George Library to create a vibrant Victoria Street precinct after 12 months of research and community consultation.
Results of a survey held late last year showed 92% of respondents felt the library was absolutely essential or well worth the cost and that there was a strong desire to revitalise and change the St George library building.
Council is looking to build a new library hub which not only improves the current library service, but would include programs and activities focussed on innovation, business and learning.
Mayor Richard Marsh said extensive research and consultation funded by a grant had led to the development of the final design concept of the project.
“This design concept will form part of our business case when Council applies for funding for the proposed $4 million project,” he said.
“The proposed space will include a new 653m2 building with a forecourt which will see the courtyard adjoining the Cultural Centre revitalised as well as the refurbishment of the Centre’s façade to include a foyer art gallery and multi-function spaces in the Cultural Centre Annex.”
The new-look St George library hub will include:
Cr Marsh said the project, in conjunction with Council's push to improve digital connectivity across the shire, would address the digital exclusion communities faced daily.
“It is hoped that by creating this space for our wider community that we can bridge the gap of learning and tertiary inequity confronting our next generations,” he said.
“The project will provide the support for our youth to adequately prepare them for work and ensure people of all ages have access to what is needed to learn and prosper.”
This community consultation and business plan was funded by the Queensland Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Maturing the Infrastructure Pipeline Program 2.
