Join a crew to help clean up the city

Published: 05 Sep 2019

Slip on some gloves, grab a bag and show your love for Cairns by ridding the city of rubbish.

The annual Great Northern Clean Up is on each weekend in September and Council invites residents of all ages to “join the crew near you”.

Council staff are leading more than 20 registered clean-up sites at parks, beaches and public areas from Gordonvale to Ellis Beach.

“It’s easier than ever to get involved in the Clean Up this year,” said Cairns Mayor Bob Manning.

“Council site coordinators will provide everything you need including bags and gloves, and you can simply join a crew near you on the day.

“This is a chance for everyone to show how much they value our environment and to make sure our region is the best it can be.

“By cleaning up now, we can also reduce the chance of litter being washed into the sea or blocking up our waterways and causing flooding when the annual wet arrives.”

Council will also use the Clean Up to track the types of rubbish collected, which will help with education and enforcement activities around littering and illegal dumping.

All participants will receive clean-up tools, including bags and gloves, from Clean Up Australia Day. Council will provide support through additional resources and arranging pick-up of the full litter bags.
