Chinatown parking, drainage upgrades continue

Work to add carparking and improve drainage in Chinatown is continuing, with temporary traffic restrictions to be in place from Monday 16 September 2019.

The project is being run to tight deadlines to ensure work is finished before the wet season, with the traffic restriction timed to happen after Shinju Matsuri Festival events are completed.

From 16 September through to December, traffic on Short St between Broome Hwy and Carnarvon St will be reduced to one-way heading into Chinatown as work moves onto upgrading the stormwater drainage under the road.

Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said the Shire had been working closely with nearby business owners and other stakeholders to keep them informed of progress since construction started.

Work on the $800,000 project is being undertaken by local firm McCorry Brown Earthmoving.

The new carpark will add 44 bays and is located next to the existing carpark off Short St behind the Broome Visitor Centre. Temporary replacement parking is available on Male Oval.

The drainage upgrades will increase the capacity of the stormwater drain under Short St and the carpark to reduce the risk of flooding.   

Other recent improvement work in Chinatown at present includes a new bus stop on Carnarvon St at the edge of Male Oval, installation of filigree art panels created by Broome’s Chinese community and Yawuru into street lights in Carnarvon St and Dampier Tce, and installing infrastructure for free WiFi.
