Everyone is invited to get involved with the next phase of design for Campbelltown’s exciting new Billabong Parklands project.
The $18.75 million regional water recreation space will be built at Apex Park, Bradbury – the southern gateway to the city centre.
It will be a place where people can socialise and relax, enjoy activities like exercise and art classes, attend events, run educational programs, have a birthday party or simply enjoy a picnic with friends.
The concept plan for the unique tourist attraction includes a series of rock pools with streams between, a swimming lagoon and zero-depth water play area.
Council wants to hear the community’s ideas for these and other features such as artworks, accessibility and amenities to be included in the final design.
“The billabong will be a centrepiece of the cultural and recreation precinct that is at the southern gateway to our city centre,” said Mayor George Brticevic.
“We need to understand how our community would use this space and what will make it a valuable destination for residents here and across the Western Parkland City,” Cr Brticevic said.
“I encourage everyone to have their say in the consultation and be part of this transformational and exciting project,” he said.
The underlying design principals of the billabong are to create a water recreation space that honours the area’s Aboriginal cultural heritage, is inspired by local rivers in the Dharawal National Park and is a welcoming and attractive place for people to visit, relax and enjoy all year round.
An online survey is now open and a family fun day is planned for 12pm to 3pm Saturday 14 September at Apex Park where residents can share their ideas for the exciting project.
The family fun day will include a variety of water play activities including water walkers, paddle boats and a sausage sizzle.
Council staff will be on hand to talk about the Billabong Parklands water recreation project and take on ideas from the community.
The project is being funded by the Western Sydney City Deals, Western Parkland City Liveability Program that funding from Federal, State and Local Government.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2020 and is forecast for completion by June 2022.
