Fairfield City mayor Frank Carbone said it is important for children and adults alike to be confident and safe when around water.
“Summer is just around the corner and is a wonderful time to get outdoors and be healthy and active while finding fun ways to stay cool,” Mayor Carbone said.
“It is important though that while having fun that we are all water-wise. It is a common misconception that children are most at risk of drowning. Adults are just as at risk without the proper care and training.
“Council is committed to doing everything it can to keep our residents safe by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to enjoy themselves safely while in the water.”
According to Royal Lifesaving Australia, 249 people drowned in Australia between July 2017 and June 2018.
Approximately 10 per cent of these drownings were children under 14 years. 38 per cent of drownings occurred in inland waterways and swimming pools.
