Quambatook is preparing for next month’s performance of the popular Australian stage show, The Sapphires.
Initially scheduled to occur as an indoor performance in June, the same show will now occur outdoors on a ‘pop up’ stage at the Quambatook Recreation Reserve on Thursday, 3 October 2019.
“Council is pleased to partner with the Quambatook Community Development Association to host this performance,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.
“The Sapphires tells the story of four Aboriginal girls who learn about love, friendship and war as their all-girl group travels to Vietnam to entertain US troops during the height of the Vietnam War.”
The stage show, first performed in 2004, then became the basis of the popular 2012 Australian film that won 11 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.
“While Quambatook is renowned for screening Australian movies at our Silo Cinema, we were thrilled to see how much the Gannawarra community were excited to see Australian live theatre as well when ticket sales were so high for The Sapphires’ June show,” Quambatook Community Development Association Chairperson, Laura O’Dwyer said.
“We were disappointed to have to reschedule our June show, but reviews of the pop-up stage are fantastic so we know it will be even bigger and better.”
Tickets for the performance, which are $25 for adults and $20 for concession, can be purchased online at www.trybooking.com/BDHEA or by visiting Council’s Customer Service Centres at Cohuna and Kerang.
Those who purchased tickets online for the June performance will have been emailed a code to receive a five per cent discount on this ticket purchase. This discount is offered as compensation for credit card fees paid on refunded tickets.
“The Sapphires provides a wonderful opportunity for community members from across the Gannawarra and further afield to travel to Quambatook to enjoy this unique outdoor experience,” said Mayor Learmonth.
Gates will open at the venue on the night at 6pm, with the show beginning at 7.30pm. Attendees are reminded to bring a chair and rug up for this outdoor performance.
